June 28, 2017 - 14:55 - Family Violence: Don't Kick the Kid...or the Dog!February 18, 2016 - 12:05 - The number of juvenile inmates in the Marion County Jail usually hovers around 40, but the command staff of the Jail understands that this population of inmates are still developing mentally and still need the care and attention of adults. Jail Commander James Martin and Major Tanesha Crear ordered a special lunch of cheeseburgers and chips in early 2016, and sat down with the juveniles to listen to what they have to say, and to also inform them of some upcoming programs based on good behavior. Clients may have Alzheimer’s, Autism, Down Syndrome, Dementia or other cognitive or mental health special needs. Clients enrolled in the program are fitted with a bracelet or anklet that contains a battery operated transmitter and emits a tracking signal. If person wearing the bracelet wanders away, the caregiver calls 911. Members of our team immediately respond to the wanderer’s area and use a mobile receiver to locate the person. Cadets participate in a two week leadership program that is designed to challenge and educate young men and woman on subjects such as self respect, being a good citizen, volunteering in your community and interviewing techniques for gaining future employment. Students are required to complete five challenges during the two weeks with the last challenge being a 6 mile mud run. The grounds are littered with tents, garbage, stolen property, used hypodermic needles, and makeshift shelters. Every community has at least one place like The Pit. Snohomish County has dozens. After years of data and seeing the same faces over and over again, Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary (along with dozens of other chiefs and sheriffs across the country) could see that the approach was not working. The county still had homeless people and mental illness in this population continued to go untreated. Problems related to drug or alcohol addiction not only continued, but were rising. The people sent to jail for trespass would come back out in two to three days and go right back to living on the street. As a result, Office of Neighborhoods deputies are charged with reaching out and trying to connect each person with service they need. Within the first month of the unit being fully staffed, they made over 200 individual contacts in the field. The hope in Snohomish County is that the new approach by Office of Neighborhoods stops funneling vulnerable populations into jail and instead into the services they need. Lopez, County of Los Angeles Sheriff's DepartmentJune 8, 2016 - 08:50 - On February 5th of 2016, Seaside police Office Sergeant Jason Goodding was shot and killed during the arrest of a wanted Felon in downtown Seaside Oregon in Clatsop County two blocks from the flag that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. He was our friend, my neighbor and loved by all in this community and is truly missed. He leaves behind a wife and two young beautiful daughters. Over 4000 people attended his funeral from all over the United States. Seaside has a population of about 6000 people. We honor this man by flying the flag of the United States of America at half mast and as Deputy Sheriffs we stand united with our fellow municipal Officers. My Deputies are proud men and women who sacrifice much and understand that every day they too may see their end of watch. Thank you for this opportunity.
