SHERIFFS APPLAUD END TO DE MINIMIS EXEMPTION
The National Sheriffs' Association, along with other leading organizations, sent a letter to the White House expressing support for the plan to close the de minimis loophole.
April 30, 2025
Dear Mr. President:
We strongly support your plan to close the de minimis loophole for goods from China on May 2, 2025, and thank you for this initiative and your order to end de minimis for all imports once adequate systems are in place to collect tariff revenue. Our coalition represents a broad range of voices, including American manufacturers and retailers, families who have lost loved ones to fentanyl, unions, and other organizations whose members are harmed by the de minimis exemption. We urge you to implement strong customs procedures as part of de minimis elimination to maximize the economic and public safety benefits of closing this dangerous loophole, which now allows goods worth $800 or less per person per day to enter the United States duty-free and virtually uninspected.
