National Sheriffs’ Association Supports Sheriff Chapman and All Sheriffs as Elected Law Enforcement Leaders
(Alexandria, VA) – The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors (Va.) are attempting to add a last minute a referendum on the ballot for November’s election to create a countywide police department and replace the elected law enforcement functions of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) along with the direct accountability of the Sheriff to the voters of Loudoun County.
“The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) supports Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman unconditionally. The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors is attempting a reckless scheme to replace an elected Sheriff with a failed social experiment and unchecked and unaccountable bureaucracy,” NSA CEO and Executive Director Jonathan Thompson said today.
“Sheriffs, like Sheriff Chapman, are elected by their citizens and are directly accountable to their communities. Sheriff Chapman is an innovative, exceptional lawman, highly experienced crime fighter and his leadership during COVID-19 has been truly outstanding.
“A recent Loudoun County Government-initiated citizen survey found the Office has a nearly 90 percent of public approval rating. The Office is one of the nation’s premier local law enforcement agencies, experiencing a dramatic 32% drop in serious crime since Sheriff Chapman began his first term in 2012, according to the Metropolitan Council of Governments Report on Crime and Control.
“Sheriff Chapman conducts his sworn duties with honor, respect, transparency and continual outreach directly with the citizens who elect him. The NSA stands proudly with Sheriff Chapman and the fight to keep political hacks and their outrageously expensive agenda away from the safety of the people of Loudoun County.”
