Mental Health: Substance Abuse

• The National Commission on Correctional Health Care, Standards for Mental Health and Opioid Treatment Programs in Corrections are continually updated to reflect the latest evidence and best practices in meeting professional, legal, and ethical requirements in delivering correctional health care services.
• The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)'s GAINS Center for Behavioral Health and Justice Transformation (Gather, Assess, integrate, Network & Stimulate) focuses on expanding access to services for people with mental and/or substance use disorders who come in contact with the justice system.
• “Jail-Based Medication-Assisted Treatment: Promising Practices, Guidelines and Resources for the Field” was developed to support jail administrators in providing effective treatment for opioid abuse and helping to halt the opioid epidemic in the United States.
• The main objective of the “National-Level Comparisons of Mental Health Estimates from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) and Other Data Sources” is to provide comparisons between NSDUH and other national data sources for adult and adolescent mental health prevalence estimates, updating a previous report comparing 2009 NSDUH estimates with other data sources.
• 2017 NSDUH Annual National Report summarizes key findings from the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) for national indicators of substance use and mental health among people aged 12 years old or older in the civilian, noninstitutionalized population of the United States.
• The JMHCP is a DOJ BJA grant program that aims to improve responses to and outcomes for individuals with mental illnesses or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders who come into contact with the justice system.
