NATIONAL SHERIFFS’ ASSOCIATION AND TENNESSEE SHERIFFS’ ASSOCIATION MOURN THE DEATH OF TYRE NICHOLS

Our hearts open to the family of Tyre Nichols and to the communities that are coming together to honor him.

Sheriffs are saddened and sickened by what happened to Tyre. This is not representative of those who wear the law enforcement uniform and take an oath to protect and keep their fellow citizens safe. We are, however, encouraged that local law enforcement moved expeditiously with a comprehensive investigation and swiftly dismissed the police officers charged with this heinous act. The system has responded and we believe justice will be served.

Like ourselves, the people of our communities are rightfully shocked and dismayed, and there is also anger. We understand and respect that our fellow citizens may want to publicly express their horror and grief at the death of Tyre through their Constitutional right to peacefully demonstrate. We in law enforcement respect these citizens and will protect them and our communities in the exercise of that right.

Finally, law enforcement will come together with our communities to have thoughtful, compassionate discussion and move forward together in honor of Tyre Nichols.
