The 2008 winners are Detective Anthony R. Rhoad from the Story County Sheriff’s Office, IA (Bachelor Degree Scholarship) and Bridget Rupe-Boudreaux from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, LA (Master Degree Scholarship)

U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and his Senate colleagues announced today that they seek to increase funding for the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program to $660 million. This would increase Iowa’s estimated share of 2008 funding from $1.5 million to $6.1 million. Harkin was also joined by police officers and local sheriffs, including Marshall County Sheriff Ted Kamatchus and Iowa’s Drug Czar Gary Kendall.

The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) and the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) have teamed up with the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), U.S. Department of Justice to tackle the rise in violent crime that is afflicting a growing number of cities across the United States.
